About Kathy

State Representative Kathy Schmaltz is a proven leader, longtime community advocate, and trusted voice for Michigan families. First elected in 2022, Kathy proudly represents Michigan's 46th House District, serving communities in Jackson and Washtenaw counties.

As Chair of the House Families and Veterans Committee, Kathy is focused on protecting families, supporting veterans, improving healthcare, and delivering practical solutions that strengthen local communities. She also serves on the House Energy, Health Policy, and Communications and Technology committees.

Kathy has been a strong advocate for hardworking Michigan residents, voting to eliminate the state income tax on tips, overtime pay, and Social Security benefits — helping workers, seniors, and families keep more of what they earn. She also introduced a bill to cut the state income tax.

Before serving in the Legislature, Kathy spent 14 years as a news anchor, writer, and Associate News Director of Community Relations at WILX-TV in Lansing. She also hosted In Focus, a public affairs program featuring conversations with lawmakers and community leaders. Former Governor John Engler also appointed Kathy to serve on the Michigan Education Trust Board and the Michigan Hospital Finance Authority Board.

A graduate of Michigan State University, Kathy has spent decades serving her community through organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters, Easter Seals, United Way, the Henry Ford Jackson Hospital Foundation, and the Jackson Grand Slam for Kids, where she has helped raise support for at-risk youth.

Kathy and her husband, Patrick, have called the Jackson area home for more than 30 years. They also raised their son Christopher in the Jackson area.
